Op Art (short for Optical Art) was a prominent art movement of the 1960s that found its expression primarily in painting. Artists used contrasting colours and geometric shapes, that repeated in specific compositions, to produce patterns that seemed to visually interact and be in motion. Important Op Art artists were Victor Vasarely (who, in fact, produced ‘Op Art’ works long before the term was coined) and Bridget Riley.

Starting in the mid-1960s, many fashion designers began incorporating the visual language of Op Art into prints and woven fabrics. This can be seen in the use of simple, bold designs and in intricate combinations of colours and patterns that made garments seem to move by themselves. Often only black and white were used, but as this book shows, many other colour combinations were possible.

This is the seventh book in the new PEPIN Fashion, Textiles & Patterns series. This series consists of large-format, stunningly illustrated volumes on a wide range of styles. Each volume in the series will include concise, authoritative texts as well as information about technical aspects and a wealth of inspiration and visual resource material. The illustrations include photographs of clothes, historical images (including fashion plates), cutting schemes, decorative details and reproductions of fabric designs. Each volume includes a CD with ready-to-use files.

The texts are in English, French, German, Italian and Spanish.
